Match each picture with its first letter

Match the First Letter invites children to connect familiar pictures with their English starting letters. Each worksheet places eight illustrations on one side and a shuffled group of letters on the other. Children name a picture, listen to its beginning and draw a line to the appropriate letter. The collection covers all twenty-six letters across its six sheets, with different picture selections to explore.

Begin by talking about the illustrations before drawing any lines. Some picture names may already be familiar, while others may need to be introduced. Say a word clearly, listen to its first sound and look through the available letters together. If more than one name could describe an object, agree on the English word you are using before asking the child to choose.

The shuffled layout encourages children to search rather than simply connecting across the same row. Work on one picture at a time and check that each drawn line reaches the intended letter. Afterwards, read through the completed matches and colour the pictures and outline letters. A child can also suggest another word beginning with one of the letters on the sheet.

Open any worksheet from the gallery as an A4 PDF in a new tab, then save or print it. You do not need to complete all eight matches in one sitting. Try a few together, return later or choose a page that includes a letter you are currently practising. The Alphabet and Missing Letters collections provide related activities for continuing the same conversation in a different format.
