Compare the same picture in different sizes

Big & Small focuses on size by showing the same outline drawing three times at different scales. Each row includes an instruction to colour either the biggest or the smallest picture. Because the subject stays the same within the group, children can concentrate on comparing its size. The collection begins with separate biggest and smallest activities before introducing worksheets that mix the two instructions.

Read the instruction together before choosing a picture. Point to all three versions and ask which is largest or smallest, depending on the task. You can compare their height, width or overall appearance, while keeping the spoken instruction in view. The words biggest and smallest are printed in bold to make the requested choice easier to find again.

Take time to check each new row rather than assuming the instruction always stays the same. A child can say their choice aloud, explain how they compared the pictures and then colour the selected version. For a practical companion activity, gather three similar objects of different sizes and arrange them from smallest to largest before returning to the worksheet.

Six A4 PDFs are available in the gallery, with six size comparisons on each sheet. Open a file in a new tab to save or print it, and choose a starting page that suits the child. You might finish a few rows during one session and return to the rest later. Completed groups can be revisited by naming the middle-sized picture or describing how it compares with both of its neighbours.
