Look for the repeat and draw what comes next

Complete the Pattern turns rows of familiar pictures into small visual puzzles. Children look along a sequence, identify the group that repeats and draw the missing picture in the empty box at the end. The worksheets begin with alternating two-picture patterns and introduce sequences involving three pictures or repeated groups. Colouring can follow the drawing, giving each completed row a creative finish.

Read a row aloud by naming its pictures in order. Listen for the part that starts again, then point to that repeating group on the page. Ask the child which picture should come next and why. If the pattern is difficult to spot, cover the blank box briefly and compare two complete repetitions before returning to the missing position.

The drawing in the answer box does not need to be a perfect copy. A simple recognisable version of the expected subject is enough to show the child's idea. You can also build a similar pattern with suitable objects on a table, repeat it together and remove one object for the child to replace. This provides another way to explore the same rule.

There are six printable A4 worksheets, with six pattern rows on each page. Open a preview or PDF button in a new tab to choose, save or print a sheet. Begin with the simpler arrangements and move to other repeating groups when appropriate. Completed pages can be revisited by explaining their rules, extending a row on spare paper or inventing an original pattern for someone else to continue.
