Count each group and record its number

Count & Write gives children groups of outline pictures to count and an empty answer box beside each group. The worksheets use a mixture of animals, plants and everyday objects, keeping the activity varied while the task stays consistent. Children count the items, write the total and then colour the illustrations. Each A4 sheet contains several exercises, making it easy to work through a little at a time.

Begin with one group and ask the child to touch or point to each picture while saying the numbers aloud. Look for a way to move through the group without skipping an item or counting it twice. Once every picture has been included, repeat the total and find the answer box. The final number said is the quantity to record.

If writing numerals is still unfamiliar, count together and offer a model on separate paper. A child can also explain the answer aloud before attempting the written version. For a different approach, colour each picture after counting it, using the changing page to keep track of progress. Keep attention on the whole group rather than how quickly an answer is written.

The collection includes four printable A4 worksheets, with previews showing the exercises before you open the PDFs. Each file opens in a new tab for saving or printing. Choose a single sheet for a counting session or revisit a completed page by checking its groups again. The separate Picture Addition and Picture Subtraction collections offer related activities when you want to introduce combining or comparing quantities through equations.
