Complete a word, then bring its picture to life
Missing Letters combines a small spelling puzzle with a colouring activity. Each worksheet presents a familiar English word with one letter left out and a matching illustration beside it. Children look at the picture, work out the word and write the missing letter before colouring. The collection includes different animals and everyday subjects, so there are several ways to find a page that sparks interest.
Begin by naming the illustration aloud. Read the letters that are already present and pause at the blank space. You can ask which letter would complete the word, or say the whole word slowly and listen together. If a child is still learning English, offer the picture name first. The aim is to connect the image, the spoken word and the letters without turning the task into a guessing race.
Once the word is complete, invite the child to read it again and check it against the picture. A second activity can be to find the same letter in another word, write the finished word on spare paper or describe the animal in a short sentence. Colouring gives the page a creative finish and provides another opportunity to talk about the subject.
Choose an individual A4 worksheet from the previews and open its PDF in a new tab for printing or saving. A single page works well for a brief activity, while a few related pictures can form a themed spelling session. Keep completed sheets together to revisit familiar words and notice which missing letters the child can now identify independently.
