Find the picture that belongs to a different group
Find the Odd One Out asks children to compare four pictures and identify the one that does not belong with the other three. The worksheets use familiar subjects such as animals, fruit, plants, vehicles and everyday objects. Children colour the different picture, turning a visual sorting task into an activity that also invites naming, describing and explaining a choice.
Begin by naming all four pictures in a row. Ask what three of them have in common before deciding which one is different. A group may relate to where things are found, what they are used for or the kind of object they represent. Give the child time to describe that connection in their own words rather than choosing an answer only from appearance.
Listening to the explanation can be as useful as seeing the coloured choice. If a child notices another sensible connection, discuss it and compare it with the main grouping suggested by the pictures. You can then look around the room for another example that would fit with the group, or invent a new row together using drawings on spare paper.
The collection contains six printable A4 worksheets, each with six picture groups. Open an individual PDF in a new tab to save or print the sheet you want. Complete one row at a time and leave room for conversation between choices. The finished pictures can also be used for vocabulary practice by naming the objects again and describing the characteristic that brought three of them together.
