Add picture groups and find the total

Picture Addition introduces simple addition through visible groups of objects. Each exercise shows one picture group, a plus sign and another group, followed by space for the answer. Children can count what they see, combine the quantities and write the total. Animals, plants and everyday items give the worksheets variety, while the same clear equation layout is used throughout the collection.

Begin by counting the first group and then the second. Ask how many objects there are altogether when both groups are included. A child may choose to count every picture from the beginning, while another may start with the first quantity and continue counting through the second group. Discuss the approach they used and connect their explanation with the plus sign.

Colouring can make the two groups easier to compare before the total is written. For example, use one colour for the first group and another for the second, while keeping both groups part of the same calculation. You can also place small objects on a table to model an exercise, then return to the printed pictures and record the answer.

There are four individual A4 PDFs, each containing several picture addition exercises. Open a preview or PDF button in a new tab to save or print a sheet. Complete a few calculations at a time, check the totals together and colour the drawings at a comfortable pace. If counting the groups needs more practice, the Count & Write collection offers a useful companion activity before adding the second group.
