Picture Subtraction presents subtraction using two groups of outline objects and a clear minus sign. Children count the first group, find the quantity represented by the second and work out what remains after subtracting it. The pictures stay visible as part of the equation, giving the child something concrete to refer to while explaining an answer. A blank box provides space to record the result.
Start by naming and counting the first group. Then count the pictures after the minus sign and say the calculation in words. Explain that this second amount is the quantity being taken away, even though its drawings remain on the paper. The worksheet does not require crossing out the illustrations; the equation shows how the two quantities are related.
If a child needs a practical model, gather a small group of counters or other suitable objects. Move away the number shown by the second picture group and count those left. Compare the practical result with the worksheet, then write the answer. Children who are ready can try explaining the calculation before using objects to check it.
The gallery contains four separate printable A4 PDFs, each with several subtraction exercises and pictures to colour. Open a file in a new tab to save or print it. Work through the page in short sections and allow time to discuss any answer that needs another look. You can compare the layout with Picture Addition, noticing how the different operation sign changes what you are asked to do with the two groups.
