Read a word and choose its picture

Read & Colour asks children to connect a written English word with the picture that represents it. Each worksheet places one word above two large illustrations, arranged vertically to give both scenes plenty of room. One picture matches the word and the other shows something different. Children read, compare and colour the matching illustration, combining a simple reading choice with a creative activity.

Look at the word before discussing the pictures. If the child can read it independently, invite them to say it aloud and explain what they expect to see. Otherwise, read it together and talk about its meaning. Then examine both drawings. Ask which details support the choice, allowing the child to point to something specific rather than selecting a picture at random.

The contrasting illustration is useful for conversation too. After choosing the correct picture, name the other scene or object and suggest a word that would match it. For example, a forest and a beach can lead to a discussion about trees, sand and places to visit. The exercise can become a short vocabulary activity without requiring extra writing on the worksheet.

Browse the previews to find a word that suits the child's reading experience, then open its A4 PDF in a new tab to print or save. Use one worksheet for a focused session or compare several completed pages. Encourage the child to return to the printed word after colouring and read it once more, linking the finished illustration with the word that prompted the choice.
