Tell a story with first, next and last

Put the Story in Order presents three related colouring scenes in a mixed sequence. Children look at what is happening in each picture and write 1, 2 and 3 in the empty boxes to show the order. The scenes are arranged vertically, giving each illustration room to show its action clearly. Once the sequence is complete, all three pictures can be coloured.

The collection includes growing a sunflower, building a snowman, making a sandwich, a butterfly's development, washing a puppy and baking a cake. Begin by looking at every scene before choosing the first one. Ask what has already happened in a picture and what still needs to happen. Changes in the objects, characters or setting provide clues to the sequence.

After numbering the boxes, invite the child to tell the story aloud using first, next and last. They can point to the scenes in their new order, even though the printed pictures have not moved. A different version of the activity is to describe one scene and ask which event comes before or after it, returning to the illustrations for evidence.

Six separate A4 PDFs are available above, each containing one complete three-picture story. Open a preview or button in a new tab to save or print your choice. You can use the sheet for discussion, independent numbering or shared colouring. Finished pages can become a story folder, with the child's own spoken or written description added on separate paper to accompany each sequence.
